Ricky Gervais has reignited the debate over celebrity “virtue signalling” with a pointed social media post shared amid the furious backlash surrounding Ed Sheeran and the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The comedian, 65, declared “virtue signalling substitutes applause for action” as he criticised public displays of moral conviction that he argued do little to advance the causes they claim to support.
Mr Gervais did not mention Mr Sheeran by name or explicitly link his remarks to the singer’s ongoing controversy.
However, his intervention came as The A Team singer faced intense scrutiny over his response to the Palestine row that has engulfed his US Loop Tour, prompting some of Mr Gervais’s followers to draw a connection between the two.

“By turning conviction into costume, it cheapens the cause, alienates the unconvinced, and leaves the real work to those too busy doing it to pose for the cameras.”
The Office creator accompanied the post with a meme featuring an image of himself presenting at the Golden Globes, alongside one of his most famous attacks on politically outspoken celebrities.
“You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything,” the image read.

One person wrote on X: “We seem to have reached the point where telling everyone you’re a good person is almost as important as actually being one.”
“And now Ed Sheeran is effectively being cancelled for refusing to virtue signal,” said another.
A third criticised celebrities who speak publicly about global affairs, writing: “Hollywood actors raking in the millions lecturing us on politics, religion and war. They return to their yachts, gated communities and secret islands.”

However, others pushed back against Mr Gervais’s argument.
One social media user penned: “Not sure I entirely agree. Some causes are so dire you need all the help you can get, particularly from those with huge global platforms.”
Another challenged the comedian over speaking out on Gaza, asking whether failing to condemn what they characterised as a “genocide” was worse than remaining silent.
The debate comes at the end of a turbulent week for Mr Sheeran, who was reduced to tears during his performance at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday.
The 35-year-old appeared on stage without his scheduled supporting acts after they withdrew from the US Loop Tour following the removal of rapper Macklemore.
Macklemore had sparked controversy during his opening performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after telling the crowd to “free Palestine” and performing his pro-Palestinian protest track Hind’s Hall.
Several Jewish and pro-Israel organisations subsequently called for the rapper to be removed from the remaining dates, before tour promoter Messina Touring Group confirmed he would no longer appear.
A string of artists then withdrew from the tour, including Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe, Finneas and Mr Sheeran’s longtime backing band Beoga.

GETTYTaking to the stage alone in Philadelphia, Mr Sheeran acknowledged the extraordinary fallout and apologised to fans.
“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry,” he told the audience.
The singer, who has traditionally avoided becoming an overtly political performer, also addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict directly.
“What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” Mr Sheeran said, adding that his “heart” had been broken by the scale of civilian deaths, including children.

GETTYHe also condemned injustice in the West Bank and described the October 7 attack on the Nova Music Festival in Israel as “horrific”, saying it had “compounded centuries of Jewish pain”.
Mr Sheeran additionally expressed concern over attempts to control what performers can say on stage, telling the audience: “I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve content of a performance.”
He added that while such restrictions existed in some countries where he performs, “it should never happen in the free world”.
