One of the most popular British car brands has broken an electric vehicle lap record by more than seven seconds at a globally renowned circuit.
The Lotus Emeya has set a new record at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit of 2:20.317, making it the fastest electric vehicle lap at the circuit.
It has slashed more than seven seconds off the previous publicly reported EV at the circuit, which was recorded at 2:27.790.
Lotus said the new achievement was down to its continued commitment to “engineering excellence and high-performance electric mobility”.
The record-breaking lap time was set by champion GT driver Daniel Lu, who was behind the wheel of an Emeya R+, which is now known as the Lotus Emeya 90.

The Emeya hyper-GT is designed “for the drivers” and makes use of cutting-edge technology and a sophisticated design.
Lotus engineered the supercar to be suitable for both everyday driving and high-performance use, as evidenced by the record-setting lap.
The Sepang International Circuit previously hosted the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix between 1999 and 2017, while it continues to host MotoGP races.
F1 legend Sebastian Vettel has the quickest time on the Sepang International Circuit with a staggering 1:34.080 in a Ferrari SF70H in 2017.

This was almost 11 seconds quicker than GP2 driver Sergio Canamasas (1:45.066) and 24 seconds quicker than MotoGP legend Alex Marquez (1:58.873).
Lotus’ Emeya model recently beat its own record as one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles, even when using a public charger.
A Lotus dealership in Kuwait was able to use an ultra-fast 450kW DC charger to reach a peak charging power of 443kW.
This allowed the Emeya to be charged in public from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 13 minutes and 35 seconds.

Lotus highlighted how this was achieved despite extreme heat conditions, emphasising the reliability and efficiency of both the electric car and the charger.
The Emeya is equipped with a state-of-the-art 800-volt charging system, which can deliver rapid charging capabilities, regardless of the charger they are using.
The Emeya 900 has a maximum range of 301 miles, rapid charging speeds of 15 minutes to 80 per cent, and a 0-62mph time of just 2.78 seconds.
