Two hikers suffering from hypothermia in “challenging” wintry weather conditions have been rescued.

They got into difficulties on a hill in the Dovestones area of Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, on Sunday evening.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team located the pair, who had become hypothermic, near the Ashway waterfalls via their mobile phones. A coastguard helicopter was sent but was unable to land due to strong winds and poor visibility.

The rescue team, a charity, provided a special tent to give the hikers shelter from the wind and rain and, when they were deemed fit enough, they were guided down the hill and handed over to paramedics. Thirty five volunteers took part in the four-hour rescue.
