Huw Edwards has launched a scathing attack on the makers of a Channel 5 drama about his downfall.

The disgraced former BBC newsreader, 64, issued a statement criticising Wonderhood Studios, the production company behind Power: The Downfall Of Huw Edwards.

His statement began: “(They) made no attempt to check with me the truth of any aspect of their narrative before going ahead with the production.

“They belatedly asked for a response after the drama had been made, while reserving the right to edit any such response.

“They also refused to disclose whether any of those making allegations had been paid for their contributions.

“Channel 5’s ‘factual drama’ is hardly likely to convey the reality of what happened,” his explosive statement, obtained by the Daily Mail, concluded.

Mr Edwards also used his statement to express remorse for the offences that led to his conviction last year.

“My deep regret and remorse for the crimes I committed were expressed in court,” he stated. “In pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity, I took full responsibility for my reprehensible actions.”

The former News at Ten presenter, who received a six-month suspended sentence in September 2024 after admitting three charges of making indecent images of children, described himself as “repelled” by those who view such material.

“I am repelled by the idea that some people enjoy viewing indecent images of children,” Mr Edwards continued. “Every image represents an innocent victim. I offer my sincere and profound apologies for what I did.”

Mr Edwards pleaded guilty in July 2024 to possessing 41 photographs on WhatsApp, including seven of the most serious category.

The former broadcaster revealed he intends to tell his own version of events in due course.

“I am making an effort to produce my own account of these terrible events,” Mr Edwards stated. “This is a slow process given the fragile state of my health.”

He referenced his long battle with mental illness, saying he had been open about struggling with the condition for 25 years.

“What is less well known is the severity of that condition, which was managed successfully until the downward spiral which led to an appalling outcome,” he explained.

Mr Edwards acknowledged that psychiatric difficulties cannot justify criminal behaviour.

“Mental illness is misunderstood by many but can never be an excuse for criminality,” he said. “It can, however, at least help explain why people sometimes behave in shocking and reprehensible ways, and why things fell apart for me in the way they did.”

A source indicated Edwards has secured an agent and will be making some form of public appearance in coming months.

Martin Clunes, who portrays Edwards in the drama, has previously spoke about the difficulties of taking on such a role.

“Beyond the salacious curiosity around this story, I really thought there was another story worth telling, that of ‘Ryan’ and his family,” the Doc Martin actor explained.

“Obviously the press and the media have focussed on the fallen big man, Huw Edwards, which, of course, is a big story. But behind that, there’s this lad and his family whose lives got turned upside down and rather spoiled.”

Mr Clunes, 64, studied archive footage to capture Edwards beyond his newsreading persona.

“I noticed from looking at that archive that he was different when he wasn’t reading the news, and I wanted to make that distinction. If you listen to his rhythms, he’s far more Welsh when he’s not newsreading,” he observed.

The actor praised co-star Osian Morgan, who plays the victim, describing him as “a brilliant young actor.”
