A man who raped a woman after she had just given birth has been sentenced to eight years in prison and handed a lifetime Restraining Order.

Michael Wilkinson, 30, of Willerby Road, Hull denied raping the woman who had recently returned home and was still recovering from childbirth.

The sentencing followed a week-long trial at Hull Crown Court that concluded last Friday.

Wilkinson was first arrested last August after a woman came forward reporting that a man known to her had raped her and had also controlled and coerced her over a significant number of years.

Following sentencing, Detective Constable Jen Rix, from Humberside Police’s protecting vulnerable people unit, leading the investigation, said: “We want to recognise the extraordinary courage shown by the victim throughout this investigation and the trial.

“Her strength has ensured that a dangerous individual has been brought to justice.

“This was an appalling and deeply violating offence, and Wilkinson targeted the woman at one of the most vulnerable moments in her life.

“His behaviour was predatory, callous, and showed complete disregard for her wellbeing, dignity, and safety.”

He said the force takes reports of sexual offences extremely seriously, and will continue to seek justice for those who have suffered at the hands of individuals “with a propensity to commit such unspeakable crimes like Wilkinson”.

“I hope this result reassures our communities that we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting victims of sexual violence and pursuing offenders with determination,” he added.

“Our main priority will always be with the victims, giving them a voice and working with partners and other agencies to make them feel supported and safeguarded every step of the way.

“We also continue to take huge steps to reduce re-offending, deter perpetrators, and above all, keep victims safe.”
