Most people have their daily skin care routines down to a T, applying a perfectly curated list of beauty products to their faces.

But there is an often overlooked body part which could be giving your age away – your hands.

This is according to creator of Skincare Lab, Marc Peterson, who explained why your hands could make you look older.

He told GB News: “We spend a lot of focus (and money) to improve the health and look of the skin on our face, but we often forget to do the same for our hands.

“As we age, the same concerns such as thinning skin, loss of volume, wrinkles, prominent veins, and sunspots happen to our hands as well.”

While hands are often forgotten about when it comes to skin care, there are some simple ways to mitigate the damage. In fact, “the same treatments you’re using to target ageing on your face can be applied to your hands”.

Skin becomes thinner with age, and hands can easily become dry as a result of frequent washing and hand sanitiser use. Using moisturiser regularly – particularly after washing – can help rehydrate the skin.

Peterson said: “Hydration is a great place to start, as the skin on our hands can easily be dehydrated from frequent handwashing.

“Use a cream rich in hyaluronic acid and ceramides to replenish and lock in moisture. Reapply after washing hands.”

Applying sun protection is another top protection method. Using SPF on your hands every day can reduce the formation of age spots.

Peterson continued: “Use sunscreen daily to prevent further damage that can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and loss of collagen.”

Many of the signs of ageing are actually sun damage. Protecting your hands on a daily basis will slow down the effects. This means wearing SPF, even on cloudy days.

It is also important to reapply throughout the day. If this is not possible, opting for gloves could be another way to protect them from harmful UV rays.

The beauty expert said: “Protect your hands while cleaning or gardening. Hot water, detergents, and garden work can dry and irritate skin, which accelerates ageing.”

Age spots often appear more prominently on the hands, but what causes them? Experts share the creams that can help prevent and minimise their appearance.

They often start to appear from the age of 40, and – while harmless – many people will want them to look less prominent for aesthetic reasons.
