“While there is consensus around annual uprating, the next few years are likely to see intense scrutiny around the most appropriate mechanism for protecting pensioners’ incomes, controlling this growing cost to the taxpayer and ensuring that future generations can rely on an adequate State Pension.”

Mr Greer noted that if earnings continue to outstrip inflation before 2030, pensioners could still see further meaningful increases under the existing system before the reforms take hold.

The rising cost of living remains a pressing concern for those approaching or already in retirement. Lily Megson-Harvey, Policy Director at My Pension Expert, said: “Another rise in inflation is the last thing households need. People are still dealing with high food, energy and everyday living costs, and seeing prices continue to rise only makes it harder to plan ahead.”

Ms Megson-Harvey encouraged people not to make hasty decisions based on a single set of figures, but to take stock of their savings and expected retirement income.

Craig Rickman, personal finance expert at interactive investor, stressed the importance of building private savings rather than depending solely on the State Pension. Mr Rickman said: “While the state pension provides a valuable foundation to meet everyday costs in retirement, it alone is unlikely to support a comfortable lifestyle.”
