Veteran filmmaker Michael Mann, 83, accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday afternoon whilst holstering a firearm during target practice at The Range LA in Los Angeles.

The director, who has spent decades as an experienced target shooter, sustained what his representatives described as a superficial wound in the incident, which took place at approximately 4pm local time.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at the licensed gun range and determined that the discharge was accidental.

A medical team also attended the scene, though the injury was assessed as minor and subcutaneous.

Mr Mann was transported to a nearby hospital, where the LAPD confirmed he was in stable condition at the time of their response.

His representatives issued a statement confirming the nature of the incident. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” the statement read. “He was treated and is being released.”

A source with knowledge of the situation told Rolling Stone that Mr Mann, who has been a practised target shooter for many years, was engaged in routine shooting practice at the facility when the accident occurred.

Despite the emergency response, the wound was not considered serious.

The LAPD did not publicly identify Mr Mann by name in their initial response, confirming only that they had attended a shooting incident at the range and that the individual involved was in a stable condition.

TMZ was first to report that the person involved was the acclaimed director.

Mr Mann is renowned for his gritty, urban crime dramas that explore the worlds of law enforcement and criminals alike.

His 1999 journalism thriller The Insider earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, with the film itself shortlisted for Best Picture. His wider body of work includes Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, and Public Enemies.

He also received an Oscar nomination as a producer on Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator in 2004.

Beyond cinema, Mr Mann was instrumental in creating the iconic 1980s television series Miami Vice, which he later adapted for the big screen.

His most recent directorial effort was the 2023 sports biopic Ferrari, featuring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penélope Cruz as his wife Laura.

The director is now expected to have several months of recovery time before embarking on his next major project.

Heat 2, the long-anticipated follow-up to his landmark 1995 crime epic starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is scheduled to begin principal photography in January 2027, as actor Stephen Graham recently confirmed to Today. Production had originally been planned to commence earlier this year.

Adapted from a 2022 novel Mr Mann co-authored with Meg Gardiner, the film functions as both a prequel and sequel to the original, charting the earlier and later lives of the characters portrayed by Pacino and De Niro.

The cast is set to include Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, and Graham.

“The characters of ‘Heat’ are so alive to me,” Mr Mann said during a 2025 masterclass at the Lumière Festival in France.
