South Korea’s Haeran Ryu says it felt like she was in an “unreal dream” as she claimed her second major title in the space of two weeks by defeating Brooke Henderson in a play-off at the Evian Championship.
Having made history with an 11-under 60 on Saturday to lead by three shots overnight at 18 under, Ryu signed for a 71 on Sunday, with her solitary birdie arriving on the 18th in the east of France.
Ryu was forced to watch as Canada’s Henderson, who began the day seven strokes adrift, charged back into contention and forced a play-off with her third eagle of the day on the final hole to sign for a seven-under 64.
However, when the 2022 winner Henderson drifted left off the tee on the extra hole and was forced to lay up, Ryu took full advantage and eventually made a birdie, with her opponent only managing a par.
“This is just a dream right now, because before three weeks [ago] I don’t have a major championship, but now two in a row,” said Ryu, who also triumphed at the Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine in June.
“It’s an unreal dream right now. A lot of great names [are] on the trophy, and I so happy that my name is on here.”
Ryu’s victory means she collects the top prize of $1.4m (£1m) and becomes one of just two players to have hoovered up all four of the women’s majors so far this term.
World number one Nelly Korda, who missed the cut at Evian-les-Bains, won both the Chevron Championship and the US Women’s Open earlier in the season.
Ryu’s recent success is all the more remarkable given she missed the cut in this event 12 months ago, and was a lowly 61st at PGA Frisco in 2025.
At one stage on Sunday it appeared as though Aki Iwai was capable of becoming a first-time major winner.
The Japanese player had a share of the lead alongside Ryu heading down the 18th, but a missed birdie putt meant she ended the tournament in third at 18 under overall.
Compatriots Miyu Yamashita and Mao Saigo finished three shots further adrift at 15 under alongside South Korea’s Jin-Hee Im.
Anna Nordqvist was the leading European player at 13 under, while English duo Charley Hull and second-round leader Lottie Woad were back at eight under.
