Wigan manager Gary Caldwell says he “could not have asked for more” from his players after they registered a first league win this year in his first game back in charge.

Caldwell rejoined the club for a second spell in the dugout earlier this week, ending three and a half years with fellow League One side Exeter City to return to the club where he finished his playing career.

After watching his new charges battle their way to a first win in nine league outings with a 1-0 victory over Luton at the Brick Community Stadium, Caldwell praised them for their commitment and courage.

“When it is 1-0 with 10 minutes to go and you haven’t won for as long as we have, you are always going to sit in and be a little bit unsure of how you get over the line,” Caldwell told Radio Manchester.

“But the bodies on the line in that last… stramash it’s called in Scotland, was quite incredible. The amount of blocks. Everything that landed to a Luton player, a Wigan player was right in his face.

“It was brilliant to see that character and desire to win football matches. Now we need to do that week in, week out. Every single player I could not have asked more from them.

“They can be top players as they have so much ability and so much more to give, but the minimum requirement was there tonight.

“That is the minimum and we need to give that for another 15 games. It was brilliant and it will get better.”
