A football fan who has been running a mile for every goal scored during the World Cup said his “crazy” challenge has pushed him to the limit, but it has been worth it.

Tom Wilmott has so far run a total of 322 miles since the tournament started on 11 June, to raise money for two Wolverhampton charities.

He has remained injury-free, even through the peak of six matches a day at the end of the group stage saw him run two lots of 19 miles, 16 and then 20 miles back-to- back during the heatwave.

“The support has been amazing,” he said. “The messages, people’s stories and [people said] they find it really inspirational.”

Wilmott, from Manchester, has passed his target of £2,000 and said he was hoping to “kick on” and reach £3,000 for Brain Tumour Support and Compton Care hospice.

“I’ve raised £2,840 so far which is great. I’m really grateful for everyone that has donated so far,” he said.

“It helps you get through. Without people being generous and putting their hands in their pockets, the running doesn’t mean much really.”
