Roland Mouret has claimed in his forthcoming memoir that the Duchess of Sussex declared she would never again wear his creations following an administrative blunder by his team.

The French-born designer, whose book I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World is set for release next week, claimed the falling-out stemmed from a mix-up in which a member of his staff erroneously reached out to the Princess of Wales’s office rather than Meghan’s regarding the return of complimentary dresses.

The incident reportedly left the Duchess unhappy, convinced that the mistake had caused her embarrassment.

Meghan had worn a number of Mr Mouret’s pieces during her period as a working member of the Royal Family.

The error by his staff in contacting the wrong royal household triggered an angry phone call from the Duchess to the designer directly, according to the memoir.

“Meghan was furious and called me. ‘You don’t realise what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me’,” he claimed.

The Duchess then reportedly told him: “You know now I can never wear your clothes again.”

In the aftermath of the row, Meghan opted to wear what Mr Mouret characterised as a “cheap high street copy” of one of his designs.

The designer says he responded by sending her a text message telling her she was being “ridiculous.”

Despite Mr Mouret’s claims, the Duchess has worn Mr Mouret’s designs since the reported row.

She was spotted wearing one of his dresses in an Instagram advertisement for her As Ever jam brand earlier this year. In addition, during a 2021 visit to New York, Meghan wore a Roland Mouret black pencil skirt.

One of her most memorable appearances in Mr Mouret’s work came at the Royal Albert Hall in January 2019, when she wore the label’s glittering Sarandon gown for an official engagement.

LATEST ROYAL DEVELOPMENTS

Mr Mouret made clear in the memoir that the reported decision to boycott his designs belonged entirely to the Duchess.

“Meghan’s decision not to wear my clothes was hers, not the palace’s, not anybody else’s. I don’t think anyone else cared,” he wrote, adding: “I didn’t see the logic of that but I didn’t question it.”

The designer, who has created pieces for the Princess of Wales since 2011, also offered warm words about Catherine.

“Many want to be famous but if Kate could do everything she does, and be married to the man she is married to, without the fame, you suspect she would choose it,” he reflected.

A spokesman for the Duchess of Sussex declined to comment.

GB News also contacted Roland Mouret’s press office for comment.
