A derelict eyesore that was formerly a transport depot will soon be transformed into housing.

The site off Greenhill Road in Middleton, Greater Manchester, once owned and operated by JW Lees Brewery, was left vacant just over 15 years ago.

Housing association First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) has signed a £6.79m contract to build 24 family homes at the site by replacing the shabby buildings left there.

Planning approval was granted for the scheme last year.

Local building firm J Walker Homes will now construct 16 homes for social rent and another eight for rent to buy on the plot.

The two and three-bedroom homes for the housing association will have green features such as solar panels and an energy performance certificate rating of at least B, according to FCHO.

Work is due to start this month with an expected completion date of May 2027.

Steve Agger of FCHO said the project would “breathe new life into a derelict piece of brownfield land unused for 15 years”.

The project will be funded by FCHO alongside £2,159,000 from Homes England and a £480,000 grant from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
