Ethan Galbraith is poised to leave Swansea City for Stoke City after the Welsh club accepted an eight-figure bid for the Northern Ireland international midfielder.

Galbraith is due to undergo a medical in the Potteries on Tuesday after Swansea agreed to let the 25-year-old leave after only a year at the club.

Galbraith, who can also play at right-back, was a standout performer for Swansea having joined from Leyton Orient for £1.5m.

The Swans had been keen to hand Galbraith a new long-term deal this summer, but the former Manchester United youngster is instead set to move on in a deal which is also expected to include potential add-ons.

Swansea sources say it had been made clear that Galbraith was not prepared to sign a new contract.

Galbraith’s current Swansea deal runs until 2028, with the club having the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

But Swansea have opted to sanction Galbraith’s exit rather than forcing him to stay.

The news comes as a hefty blow to head coach Vitor Matos given Galbraith’s contribution last season.

He will depart having scored four goals in 44 Swansea appearances, a number of which were in his less favoured position on the right flank of defence.

In April, Matos said he hoped Galbraith would stay at Swansea for a decade and described him as a “really important player”.
