EDF is giving households the chance to access free electricity this winter after extending its Sunday Saver scheme into February, making it the only major UK supplier currently offering customers complimentary power on multiple Sundays.

Under the scheme, eligible households can receive free electricity on four Sundays over the coming weeks, but only if they first cut their usage during weekday peak hours.

The qualifying period runs from 4pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Customers who reduce their consumption during those hours earn free electricity the following Sunday, with the number of free hours tied to the size of the reduction.

EDF said households can earn between four and 16 hours of free power.

A five per cent reduction unlocks four hours; a 20 per cent cut earns eight hours; a 35 per cent drop provides 12 hours; and the maximum 16 hours is awarded to those who halve their peak‑time usage.

The company said the scheme is designed to encourage customers to shift energy use away from the busiest periods, with free electricity intended for energy‑intensive tasks such as laundry, cleaning and batch cooking.

Customers can track their progress through the Energy Hub section of their online EDF account.

The scheme, launched in 2024, has already delivered £5.2million in savings to participating households.

More than 260,000 customers have taken part, with EDF distributing over 17.5 million hours of free electricity since launch.

The South East recorded the highest participation, with more than one million free hours earned — around 25 hours per household each month.

Individual customers have reported substantial savings.

Natasha Shields from Barnsley said she had accumulated more than 680 free hours.

“The Sunday Saver challenge is brilliant and has helped us with the cost of living,” she said, adding that her family switches off non‑essential appliances during peak hours and uses battery‑powered lights while spending evenings playing board games.

Jon Perks, EDF’s sales and marketing director, said the scheme was designed to support households during the most expensive months of the year.

“With winter bills at their highest, Sunday Saver continues to give customers a simple, practical way to cut costs,” he said.

Customers must have a working smart meter

The initiative also helps reduce pressure on the electricity grid by encouraging demand‑shifting, he added.

To take part, customers must have a working smart meter capable of sending half‑hourly usage data.

Registration for the February extension closes at 11.59pm on February 1, with the weekday reduction challenge beginning the next day. Eligible customers can then use their free electricity on February 15, February 22, March 1 and March 8.

EDF said more than 100,000 households benefited from a festive giveaway in December, receiving eight hours of free electricity on Christmas Day — a total of more than 910,000 free hours.

The supplier said it will continue to assess demand for future incentive schemes.
