A major energy supplier is offering millions of households the opportunity to get free electricity from next month as part of a cost of living scheme.

EDF is bringing back its Sunday Saver initiative for the month of May, giving customers the chance to accumulate as many as 64 hours of complimentary electricity regardless of weather conditions.

By moving energy-intensive activities outside these busy hours, participants can unlock free electricity to use on Sundays.

The amount of complimentary power available depends on how much usage customers manage to shift, with rewards ranging from four to 16 hours each week.

The programme has delivered substantial savings since its introduction in 2024, with participants collectively earning more than 22.5 million hours of free electricity.

This translates to bill reductions totalling £7.2million across all households taking part. Those enrolled in Sunday Saver typically receive around 18 hours of complimentary power each month on average.

As temperatures rise, there remain numerous opportunities for households to benefit from the scheme during the summer months. EDF suggests avoiding tumble dryers in favour of drying clothes outdoors on washing lines.

Keeping curtains and blinds closed in unoccupied rooms helps maintain cooler temperatures without additional energy use. Running dishwashers overnight or during breakfast hours rather than in the evening peak period is another effective strategy.

Households can also unplug devices and chargers, relying on battery power instead during busy periods. For families, swapping indoor gaming consoles for outdoor activities offers both energy savings and fresh air.

Preparing meals in batches at weekends and simply reheating during the week reduces cooking energy, while electric vehicle owners should charge outside peak times.

Joe Souto, the directvor of Retail at EDF, said: “Regardless of the weather, with Sunday Saver customers can earn free electricity every Sunday, and as we head into the warmer months, there’s still plenty of opportunities to save on bills.

“Sunday Saver makes it simple for customers to flex their electricity use during busy weekday evenings, save money on their bills, and be rewarded with free electricity.

“This means customers can focus on enjoying their summer plans and not worry about their bills.”

For those seeking additional savings, EDF’s FreePhase tariffs provide complimentary electricity when renewable energy generation exceeds demand, with customers receiving 37 hours free in the past fortnight.

Registration for May’s Sunday Saver closes at 11.59pm on May 3, with the challenge commencing on May 4.

EDF customers are reminded to check the energy supplier’s website for further information on the cost of living initiative.
