Eddie Redmayne has been ordered to pay £1,530 following a speeding offence in west London last autumn.

The Academy Award-winning actor was captured by a speed camera travelling at 28mph in a 20mph zone on the A4 near Earl’s Court shortly before 11am on October 14.

Court documents reveal the star’s Audi was heading towards West Kensington when the offence occurred.

Redmayne, who claimed the Best Actor Oscar in 2015 for portraying Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, acknowledged he was behind the wheel at the time.

GETTY

The Metropolitan Police issued a notice of intended prosecution on October 20, six days after the incident was recorded.

The Day of the Jackal star’s total bill comprises a £1,000 fine alongside additional charges.

However, his response to the police paperwork arrived too late to qualify for an out-of-court settlement.

Court records indicate Mr Redmayne signed a form on March 1 confirming he had been driving on the day in question.

Mr Redmayne subsequently entered a guilty plea to the speeding charge

A police official explained the consequences of the delayed response: “Due to the late response to notice of intended prosecution, this case does not qualify for an out-of-court disposal and has therefore been referred to the prosecutions team for a single justice procedure notice to be issued.”

The delay meant the matter had to proceed through the criminal courts rather than being resolved through a fixed penalty notice or speed awareness course.

Mr Redmayne subsequently entered a guilty plea to the speeding charge.

The case was dealt with last Wednesday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court through the Single Justice Procedure, a streamlined process for minor criminal matters that allows a magistrate to determine outcomes based on written submissions alone.

Mr Redmayne was not required to appear in person for the private hearing.

The court imposed the maximum £1,000 penalty for the offence, along with £130 in costs and a £400 victim surcharge.

Three penalty points were also added to the actor’s driving licence.

The Single Justice Procedure enables courts in England and Wales to handle non-imprisonable offences without requiring defendants to attend a formal hearing, with decisions made on documentary evidence.

GETTY

Fines handed down to motorists prosecuted for breaching 20mph limits last week ranged from £40 to the £1,000 maximum that Mr Redmayne received.

The stretch of the A4 Cromwell Road where Redmayne was caught became subject to a 20mph restriction in autumn 2023, forming part of a Transport for London programme to reduce speeds across 40 miles of the capital’s road network.

Kensington and Chelsea Council had announced plans in 2020 to implement 20mph limits on all residential streets within the borough.

Mr Redmayne was one of 450 drivers prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police last week for exceeding speed limits in London’s 20mph zones.
