Thousands of older residents are missing out on crucial support, with a lesser-known benefit available to people aged 80 and over.

Millions of pensioners across Britain receive regular state pension payments each year.

The Over 80 Pension provides £105.70 each week to people who receive no basic state pension or whose existing entitlement falls below that level.

The payment acts as a top up to ensure eligible pensioners receive a minimum income to help cover daily living costs.

Eligibility for the Over 80 Pension is not linked to National Insurance contributions.

Instead, applicants must meet residency rules, including living in the UK for at least 10 years within a 20-year period that includes the day before their 80th birthday.

The Department for Work and Pensions states people who reached state pension age on or after April 6 2016 do not qualify for this support, because they fall under the new state pension system instead.

Alongside the Over 80 Pension, another benefit could bring thousands of pounds in extra annual income to older people who meet the criteria.

Pension Credit is a tax-free, means-tested payment designed to raise weekly income to a guaranteed minimum of £227.10 for single pensioners or £346.60 for couples.

People with disabilities or caring responsibilities may qualify for additional amounts.

GETTY

Nearly 1.4 million people across Britain currently receive Pension Credit, according to Government figures.

But DWP data shows more than 700,000 eligible older people are still not claiming the support.

The department estimates this could mean around £4,300 per year going unclaimed for some individuals.

Many older people are unaware they could still qualify for Pension Credit even if they own their home or have savings.

Receiving as little as £1 per week in Pension Credit can unlock further support.

This gateway entitlement gives access to Housing Benefit for renters or Support for Mortgage Interest for homeowners.

Claimants may also receive a Council Tax discount depending on their circumstances.

People aged 75 and over who qualify for Pension Credit can access a free TV licence.

NHS costs can also be reduced, including dental treatment, glasses and travel to hospital appointments.

Pension Credit can help with energy costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme and higher rates of Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.

Discounts on Royal Mail redirection services are also available for claimants who are moving home.

Some people believe their savings or property ownership automatically prevent them from claiming, but the DWP urges older residents to check eligibility.

Applications for the Over 80 Pension can be made up to three months before an individual’s 80th birthday.

People can contact the Pension Service on 0800 731 7898 to request a claim form or obtain one from a local Jobcentre Plus.

Applications for Pension Credit can be made up to four months before reaching state pension age.

People can check their eligibility through the online calculator on GOV.UK

GETTY

The quickest way to check eligibility is through the online calculator on GOV.UK, which asks for details about income, savings and investments.

The Pension Credit helpline, available Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm, can be reached on 0800 99 1234.

Claims for Pension Credit can be backdated for three months if the person met the criteria during that period.

Organisations including Age UK, Citizens Advice and Independent Age offer guidance for people who need help understanding the application process.
