The Duchess of Edinburgh was visibly moved to tears on Thursday during the REME Memorial Day, held at the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Sophie, 61, who serves as Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was photographed wiping away a tear during the emotionally charged proceedings.

The ceremony marked REME’s 84th birthday and featured the unveiling of a newly crafted memorial centrepiece, produced by the Corps’ own metalsmiths.

Wearing navy blue throughout, the Duchess appeared deeply affected by the occasion.

Her outfit comprised a navy A-line skirt matched with a blazer and collared shirt in the same shade, finished with grey suede boots and a small handbag in a coordinating blue tone.

Sophie assumed the Colonel-in-Chief role in 2022, taking on a position that the late Duke of Edinburgh had held for more than half a century.

The prestigious military appointment reflects her longstanding connection to the armed forces and has seen her attend numerous REME engagements since inheriting the title from Prince Philip.

Thursday’s appearance in Staffordshire caps an exceptionally active period for the Duchess, who has only recently arrived back from an overseas visit to Zambia.

Since her return to the UK, Sophie has maintained a packed diary of engagements.

She attended celebrations marking the Royal Mencap Society’s 80th anniversary at an event hosted by the Financial Times last week.

The Duchess also made a trip to The Hague, where she participated in the International Civil Society Action Network Forum.
