A drought has been extended over the whole of Wales as Britain continues to grapple with “exceptionally high” temperatures.

Environment body Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said sustained high temperatures were causing the environment to “deteriorate”.

The region is set to experience its driest July in almost two centuries and, just last week, North Wales and the Upper Severn were given drought status.

Now, after continued low rainfall and warmer temperatures, the drought has been extended to cover the entire country.

Most rivers across Wales are exceptionally low, and the dry conditions are causing river beds to dry out, distressing fish, causing algal blooms.

Farmers are also worried about the impact on crop growth, the body added.

There were also worries about grazing conditions and levels of drinking water for livestock, the NRW said.

Rhian Thomas, Sustainable Water and Nature Manager at NRW, said: “The intensity of the heat and the exceptional lack of rainfall means this is a rapidly changing picture in Wales.

“Our teams are closely monitoring forecasts and river flows and responding to increasing environmental concerns and incidents across Wales.

“The toll on the environment, our land and agriculture is clear to see, with many of our teams still dealing with the aftermath of extensive wildfires which have devastated forestry, grassland and special habitats.

“With no strong indications for notable rainfall in the forecasts, and risks of further heatwaves over the summer, it’s more important than ever that we all use water wisely.

“Every drop we waste is less water for our rivers and wildlife when they need it the most.”

The entire nation is battling with scorching temperatures throughout the summer, with authorities warning the extreme conditions could stick around until mid-autumn.

Britain has just experienced its fourth heatwave of the season, as temperatures reached sizzling highs of 35C in some areas across southern England.

Half of England is now officially in drought.

The high temperatures have triggered calls for adaptation in the face of extreme weather.

The National Trust has led the way, warning that the UK was at risk of the same “unthinkable” wildfires that are currently threatening Europe.

Over the past fortnight, wildfires have covered Edinburgh’s Arthur’s Seat, he Isle of Wight and Dunwich Heath in Suffolk.

Hilary McGrady, Director General at the National Trust said: “We’ve all been watching in horror as our neighbours in Europe are battling the most extreme fires.

“Fires like these might once have seemed unthinkable in Europe and the UK – but that certainty is gone.”
