US President Donald Trump has welcomed Labour’s decision on the Jackdaw gas field, hailing it as “great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen”.
Taking to Truth Social, Mr Trump said: “Great news for the wealth and prosperity of the United Kingdom, and the wonderful region of Aberdeen.
“The UK has started drilling in the North Sea, one of the greatest and most prosperous areas of OIL in the World.
“They should go FULL BLAST!!! This will make the UK very wealthy again. TAKE DOWN THE COSTLY AND RIDICULOUS WINDMILLS! President DJT.”
It follows Kemi Badenoch’s warning to Andy Burnham to “live in the real world” and approve all new oil and gas licences.
Addressing the Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions, the Conservative leader said: “Of course we need renewables, but we live in the real world, the world that still needs oil and gas, the world that depends on it, and if we don’t produce it, Britain and Europe will buy it from Russia.”
She added: “[Andy Burnham] says that it strengthens our energy security, so that means that he should approve all new oil and gas licences.
“Blaming the process and our decisions, he’s the Prime Minister now, and we are facing a global energy crisis.
“Drilling more oil and gas in the North Sea would give us more energy, more jobs and more tax revenue, something that we desperately need.”
The Prime Minister hit back, replying: “She didn’t, and they [Conservatives] didn’t give any regard to our climate obligations.
“These things have to be considered in the round and they have been considered in the round, and that’s why the decision the Government has made is a decision that is the right decision.”
