Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken unprecedented action to seize control of British Steel from its Chinese owner Jingye.
The dramatic intervention aims to prevent the closure of the Scunthorpe plant.
Parliament has been recalled for Saturday, where MPs will debate emergency legislation.
The move paves the way for what government sources indicate is likely to be nationalisation.
The emergency laws will grant Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds extraordinary powers to direct the company’s operations.
Once the legislation is passed, Reynolds will be able to order British Steel to purchase raw materials to keep two blast furnaces operating at the Scunthorpe plant.
The UK taxpayer will assume the costs of these purchases.
Jingye, which acquired British Steel in 2020, has reported losses of approximately £700,000 per day at the Scunthorpe operation.
