Drivers are facing long delays on the A1 this morning following a devastating lorry fire, which prompted urgent responses from emergency services.

The A1 in Cambridgeshire remains closed northbound between the B1048 (St Neots) and the B1041 (Little Paxton) due to a lorry fire.

National Highways outlined that traffic caught within the closure has been released past the scene.

Emergency services, including Cambridgeshire Police and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, attended the scene.

While the burnt-out HGV has been recovered, there is still debris on the carriageway, as well as part of a shed load.

The transport authority confirmed that a grab lorry has been arranged to clear the debris.

Once recovery is complete, a full inspection will take place to see if there has been any damage to the road surface.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire said: “At 4.29am on Wednesday, crews from Kimbolton, St Neots, Sawtry and Huntingdon, along with a water carrier (Bedfordshire), were called to a lorry fire on the A1 near Little Paxton.

“Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire before returning to their stations by 6.55am. The cause of the fire was accidental.”

Traffic is advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion signs.

  • From Wyboston, head eastbound via the A428

  • Continue until you meet the A14 J23 and head westbound and re-join the A1 at Brampton
