Ben Aitchison gave another compelling demonstration of his all-round qualities as Derbyshire advanced towards victory in the County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire at Chesterfield.
The fast bowler, who scored his maiden first-class hundred last month against Middlesex, plundered 75 from 74 balls and shared an eighth wicket stand of 125 with Anuj Dal who made 41.
Mitchell Stanley plugged away to take 5-80 but Derbyshire’s 364 gave them a lead of 203 and by the close Lancashire were crumbling with Aitchison claiming 3-25 to leave them on 140-6, still 63 behind.
Seamer Rory Haydon shared the bowling honours with 3-38 to leave Lancashire’s fading hopes resting on Marcus Harris who was unbeaten on 57
The match had been in the balance at the start of day two with Derbyshire’s lead a slender 36 but by lunch, the game was running away from Lancashire.
James Anderson’s opening spell from the Lake End was always likely to have a bearing on the outcome but although he conceded only 18 from seven overs, he could not break through.
The Lancashire captain was convinced he had Brooke Guest lbw but the umpire disagreed and the hosts had added 34 in 10 overs before Stanley gave the visitors hope.
Wayne Madsen got a leading edge and was caught at cover before Guest dragged a drive into his middle stump.
At that stage, Derbyshire’s lead was only 73 but the pendulum had taken a big swing towards the hosts by the time Dal and Aitchison were parted.
They tucked into some increasingly ragged bowling to stretch Derbyshire’s lead to 155 at the end of the morning session before Aitchison went into overdrive after the interval, swatting Stanley over the covers for six and pulling Anderson for another maximum.
Both fell taking on Anderson who knew his team would need a big effort with the bat to deny Derbyshire.
Michael Jones and Keaton Jennings battled through probing spells from Muhammad Abbas and Aitchison but the introduction of Haydon plunged Lancashire into trouble.
Jennings edged a drive into this stumps and in Haydon’s next over, Jones was tempted into pushing at one and Guest took a sharp catch standing up.
Aitchison trapped Josh Bohannon on the crease to leave the Red Rose in peril at tea on 57-3 but Harris and Harry Singh held up Derbyshire for 23 overs.
Singh batted with determination, facing 58 balls, before Haydon brought one back sharply to claim his 22nd championship wicket of the season.
Lancashire’s position would have been even worse if Aitchison had hung on to a hard chance at second slip when Harris was on 46 but he removed Liam Livingstone and Stanley in consecutive overs to take his team to the brink of victory.
