Three soldier statues erected in a town centre have been vandalised, which has prompted outrage from a local community group, which has described it as “disgusting”.

The trio of Tommy silhouettes, put up in the Ossett precinct, were vandalised on Sunday.

Visit Ossett Chair Mark Elvin said it was “disgusting and so sad”.

“These have been installed to remember those brave soldiers who gave their lives for us,” he said.

West Yorkshire Police has urged anyone with information about the incident to get in touch with them.

The vandalism comes after wooden silhouettes were damaged before the metal ones were installed.

Mr Elvin said the statues were installed to enhance the town and make it attractive to visitors.

“It’s the little things that make a big impact,” he added.
