The identical Roper twins created a slice of Wales team history as the gymnasts both won Commonwealth Games bronze in Glasgow within a couple of hours of each other.

Abigail secured third place in the women’s vault, one place ahead of sister Emily, who then claimed her own medal later in the afternoon by finishing third in the uneven bars.

“I can’t even put into words how crazy it is,” said Abigail.

“I went into this final with no expectations, it was my first final at a major tournament and I was just happy to make it.

“To come away with a bronze medal is just insane.”

Emily outlined how she recovered from her disappointment of finishing fourth to clinch her bronze.

“Coming back from the vault was disappointing but I was super proud for Ab,” said Emily.

“It was about doing my own thing on the bars and this result was just amazing. I just needed to regather my emotions and just know I knew what I could do.”

“Going from vault straight to bars, it wasn’t that long a time. So being resilient obviously helped a lot and I’m glad it paid off.”

Welsh gymnast Jemima Taylor, who came in for Ruby Evans, finished seventh. Australia’s Kate McDonald won gold and Canada’s Ellie Black picked up silver.

Wales have now claimed six medals in Glasgow, with five bronze and one silver so far.
