A bed bug infestation has forced the cancellation of a highly-anticipated Christmas celebration at care home in Bedfordshire.

The festive event had been scheduled to take place on Saturday at Priory View Residential Apartments in Dunstable.

The facility provides accommodation for elderly people who live independently within the development.

But the local authority confirmed the annual Christmas fete would not proceed as planned due to the pest problem.

Priory View holds notable significance, having received a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II who officially inaugurated the development in 2017.

The cancellation has left many feeling let down about missing the festive celebration.

Lorraine Harmsworth, a 69-year-old resident, expressed the collective disappointment, telling the BBC “everybody was really, really looking forward” to the fete.

For many elderly residents, such gatherings provide important opportunities for social interaction and community celebration during the holiday period.

Central Bedfordshire Council has acknowledged the pest issue at the property it owns and operates.

Officials confirmed it “will continue to work closely with pest-control specialists, arranging all necessary treatment visits to resolve the issue”.

Multiple treatment sessions are being coordinated to ensure the bed bug problem is fully eliminated.

However, the council has not provided a timeline for when the facility might return to normal operations. No alternative arrangements for the cancelled Christmas celebration have been announced for residents.
