The country singer surprised Alex Moffett, 19, of Erie, Colorado in the hospital after learning she was on the way to his concert with her family when they were struck by another vehicle.
The Montana State University student had just had lunch with her family — her younger sister, their father and their grandmother — and together, they were on their way to Stapleton’s All-American Road Show concert in Kansas City.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the other driver was a 16-year-old teenager who fell asleep at the wheel and survived the accident.
Alex’s father Derek Moffett, 55, and her grandmother, Patricia Moffett, 83, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Alex and her younger sister Catherine Moffett, 16, were airlifted from Warrensburg to the Research Medical Center in Kansas City.
