Charlie Peters has praised the People’s Channel viewers after the channel secured another major public-voted television award, declaring: “You can’t pull a fast one on the great British public.”

Speaking exclusively to GB News Entertainment Editor Alex Davies at the National Reality TV Awards, Charlie said the broadcaster’s continued success demonstrates its growing popularity with audiences across the UK.

Asked what another award nomination says to GB News’ competitors, he replied: “Well, it shows that we are the People’s channel, there’s no doubt about it now, is there?

“Everyone’s seen the figures. We were walking the walk and we can also talk the talk, that’s why we’re here, there’s no doubt about it.”

Charlie suggested some critics still underestimate the broadcaster, but said viewers continue to back GB News whenever they are given the opportunity.

“I think lots of people will maybe cast a little bit of a side eye towards GB News, but they won’t be doing that to people at home, in their cars, wherever they are, watching us, listening to us on the radio.

“You can’t pull a fast one on the great British public, and when they get the choice, they watch GB News.”

His confidence proved well-founded as GB News went on to win the Best News Programme award, beating the BBC, ITV and Sky in a category decided entirely by public vote.

The latest victory comes just weeks after the broadcaster retained the Best News Programme title at the Tric Awards for a fourth consecutive year, continuing a run of success in awards chosen by viewers.

Asked for a message to those who voted, Charlie thanked audiences for their unwavering support.

“We love them, there’s no doubt about that. We absolutely adore the people who do that,” he said.

“But isn’t it fun how we always win these competitions? Fingers crossed for tonight! When the great British public gets a vote, we come out on top.

“When it’s left to others, these so-called juries and these panels, sometimes excellent work done by GB News gets overlooked.”

Charlie added that he believes the broadcaster has transformed the television news landscape since launching five years ago.

“So I can understand why many of them are a bit gutted that we turned up on the scene out of nowhere five years ago, shaking things up a lot.

“But everyone can see now, can’t they, that they’re rather happy with the fizz that we’ve created.”

Reflecting on GB News’ fifth anniversary, Charlie revealed the defining moment of his career at the channel came when he was given the opportunity to front his first major investigation.

“I didn’t have a background in broadcasting when I turned up at this place,” he said.

“I had no TV training, no broadcasting experience. I just turned up and said I want to do some work, I want to do some investigations.

“I think there are some stories in this country that haven’t been told.”

The presenter continued: “I think one of the great joys and successes of GB News is it’s given people, regardless of their background or upbringing, the chance to do something different.”

Charlie said producing his first long-form documentary remains his proudest achievement.

“My key memory would have been the first time I got to do some proper, lengthy investigations. My first proper documentary.

“That was a really exciting experience to take stock of what had been achieved with that and to see, after that, all the effects that it had.”

He added that watching the programme air for the first time remains a moment he will never forget.

“Even the security guard on the door turned around and watched it on the screen.

“I think they realised that it was a turning point for the channel and I was part of that.

“I’ll never forget that feeling.”
