Carlos Alcaraz has entered next month’s Cincinnati Open as the world number three moves closer to returning from a wrist injury.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion last played on tour in April when he suffered an injury at the Barcelona Open.

He has since withdrawn from the French Open and Wimbledon, missing the chance to defend his Roland Garros title.

Alcaraz will miss the Canadian Open, the next Masters tournament on the calendar, which is held in Montreal from 2-13 August.

But he intends to feature in the Cincinnati Open, also a Masters event, which runs from 13-23 August.

The 23-year-old will be looking to prove his readiness for the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year where he is reigning champion.

Alcaraz is also the title holder at Cincinnati, after Jannik Sinner retired from their final last year because of illness.

Dominant Sinner has won all five Masters 1,000 titles so far this year, and he is in the field for Montreal following his triumph for a second successive year at Wimbledon.

English interest in Cincinnati will not include Emma Raducanu who pulled out of Wimbledon because of a stress fracture in her lower leg.

Raducanu, 23, is battling to be fit for the US Open, which begins on 30 August.

Jack Draper will need to rely on a wildcard should he want to compete in Cincinnati, but there is a spot for new British number one Arthur Fery.

Fery is up to a career-high ranking of number 36 in the world after his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals.
