Finlay Tarling, the promising young Welsh cyclist and time trial specialist, has died at the age of 19 following a serious incident during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The tragedy occurred on Friday during the 166.8km route between Melgaco and Fafe.
Tarling, the younger brother of Ineos Grenadiers star Josh Tarling, had represented Great Britain on both road and track. He was competing for the NSN Development Team, which he had joined last year.
The 87th edition of Portugal’s premier stage race was the backdrop to one of the sport’s most devastating losses in recent memory.
The organisers and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed his passing in a statement expressing deep sorrow.

Portuguese broadcaster RTP reported that Tarling was struck by a vehicle that was not part of the race convoy and was travelling in the opposite direction.
The race organisation itself has described the incident only as a “serious accident,” without elaborating on the precise circumstances.
In response to the tragedy, organisers immediately neutralised the remainder of the stage through to the finish in Fafe. The planned podium ceremony was also cancelled as a mark of respect and mourning.
“In light of this tragic event, the race will be neutralized until reaching Fafe and, as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony scheduled for today will not take place,” the organisers stated. They added that further details would be released when circumstances permitted.
Tarling’s team expressed their devastation at the loss. “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” NSN Development Team said.

“Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed.”
The squad directed their sympathies towards those closest to the young rider. “Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend,” the statement continued.
Before joining NSN Development Team, Tarling had been part of the Israel Premier Tech Academy setup, steadily building a career that marked him out as one of British cycling’s brightest emerging talents.
Portuguese President Antonio Jose Seguro offered his condolences, remarking that Tarling’s death had “plunged the peloton, the tournament and the host nation into mourning.”
The Portuguese Cycling Federation, alongside the race organisers, expressed their profound grief.
“The organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones,” their joint statement read.
The organisers pledged to share additional information as soon as conditions allowed. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the international cycling community, with a young Briton of considerable promise lost on the roads of northern Portugal.
