Britain’s oldest man is celebrating his 110th birthday today.

Hugh Munro Kerr was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland on October 9, 1915.

Mr Kerr became the oldest man in Scotland on July 5, 2023, following the death of 108-year-old David Crawford.

After the death of 109-year-old Georgina Stewart, Mr Kerr became the oldest person in Scotland on September 27, 2024.

Donald Rose had previously been the oldest man in the UK, however he died aged 110 on July 11, 2025.

In the past, restaurants which have hosted him have publicly celebrated Mr Kerr’s milestone birthdays. One, near Glasgow, shared images of him on his 107th big day.

Congratulating him on a past birthday, one social media user said: “I demand a recount! And some of his magic potion!

“Happy birthday to Hugh, wearing well is an understatement! Hope you had a lovely day.”

According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 16,140 centenarians in the UK in 2023.

Within this, it is much more common for women to live longer, with females making up 18 of the 20 oldest people in Britain.

The world’s oldest person, 116-year-old Ethel Caterham, lives in a care home in Lightwater, Surrey.

Crediting a “positive mental attitude” for her longevity, Ms Caterham is the last person alive who was a subject of King Edward VII – and last month, met with his great-great-grandson King Charles III.

The oldest man in Europe, Italian Vitantonio Lovallo aged 111 years and 195 days, is the 26th oldest person in the continent.

Of the 64 supercentenarians – people aged over 110 – in Europe, only four are men.

Mr Kerr shares a birthday with the Duke of Kent, 90, Brian Blessed, 89, and former Prime Minister Lord Cameron, 59.

The Oldest in Britain website, a crowd-sourced page which keeps track of the UK’s record-holders, is still looking for data on the longest-married living couple in the country.

With the record duo still unknown, the site has urged the public to come forward “if you know of a married couple who have been married for over 75 years”.
