A tropical cyclone is forecast to form off the coast of Western Australia with residents warned to prepare for ‘destructive’ winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology has been tracking a tropical low off the coast of the Pilbara and believe it will develop into a tropical cyclone by 8am (AWST).
While the cyclone isn’t expected to make landfall, the Bureau warned it will cause ‘destructive wind gusts’ reaching up to 100km/h and storm tides.
‘Those gales will start early Sunday morning, and then extend out to Exmouth later Sunday and then to Ningaloo early Monday,’ Luke Huntington said.
Several flood watch warnings have also been issued.
‘We’re looking at around 50 to 100 millimetres along the Pilbara coastline, from [Saturday] right through to Monday,’ Mr Huntington said.
‘The low was situated yesterday near the south-west Kimberley coast and generated about 120 millimetres at Broome Airport in the last 24 hours.’
More to come.
