Police have launched a major operation at the Sydney Jewish Museum after a ‘suspicious item’ was found inside.
Emergency services were called to the museum on Darlinghurst Road in Darlinghurst, in Sydney’s CBD, just after 9:30am after the item was reportedly located on the first floor.
NSW Police confirmed there is ‘no threat’ but urged the public to avoid the area which has been closed off by the operation.
Footage from the scene show several fire trucks and police vehicles stopped outside the museum as about 50 people were evacuated to nearby Green Park.
Police officers were seen speaking to a number of people at the museum while firefighters equipped with gas masks examined the building.
Duty Commander for Fire and Rescue NSW, Michael Woodward, told reporters at the scene that a ‘substance’ had been found.
‘The substance has been rendered safe,’ Mr Woodward said.
More to come.
