A boy has died after being hit by a falling tree, police have confirmed.

The tragedy occurred on Holmcroft Road, Stafford, on Saturday evening, with emergency crews rushing to the scene shortly after 6.30pm.

Despite the response from multiple emergency services, the youngster could not be saved.

Staffordshire Police confirmed officers attended alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service personnel and Midlands Air Ambulance.

The teenager was declared dead at the scene shortly after half past seven that evening.

Authorities have notified the boy’s relatives of his death.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Tragically, nothing could be done to save the boy. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 7.30pm.”

A cordon was established by police following the incident and will remain in place until the force has completed initial inquiries into the tragedy.

On Sunday, authorities continued to urge members of the public to stay away from the area during their investigation.

The local community has paid tribute to the teenager in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Stafford & District Sunday Football League announced via social media that all fixtures on Sunday would observe a minute’s silence before kick-off.

St Bertelin’s Church Stafford held prayers on Sunday “for the young man, for his family, and for all who knew and who loved him”.

The church has opened its doors to allow people to light candles in remembrance of the boy or bring floral tributes.

Mourners have also been fastening ribbons to a wooden cross positioned beside the church as a mark of respect.
