Nicole Kidman and Jodie Foster were spotted having an intense conversation during the 2025 Golden Globe Awards ceremony on Sunday.
Kidman, 57, could be seen grasping Jodie’s arms as the 62-year-old Silence Of The Lambs star leaned close to her.
The chat, which occurred the same night that Jodie won her fifth Golden Globe, puzzled fans on social media after the New York Times’ awards season columnist Kyle Buchanan shared video of the strange interaction on X (formerly Twitter).
‘Nicole Kidman is *locking in* to this intense conversation with Jodie Foster during the Golden Globes commercial break,’ he captioned the clip, which appeared to have been shot from a video screen located inside the Beverly Hilton hotel, where comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the film and television awards show.
To get a better understanding of the leading ladies’ fascinating dynamics, DailyMail.com checked in with body language expert Judi James for context.
According to James, Kidman and Foster’s conversation showed significant ‘signals of friendship’ based on their expressions and physical contact.
Nicole Kidman, 57, and Jodie Foster, 62, perplexed fans when they were seen having an intense conversation in a clip shared to X on Sunday from the 2025 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills
But body language expert Judi James shared her take on the shockingly intense discussing with DailyMail.com
However, she noted that there seemed to be ‘something rather fierce and intense about their body language during their brief conversation.’
James explained that Foster might be ‘accused of invading [Kidman’s] social space’ because of how aggressively she leaned over the Eyes Wide Shut actress, who was seated while Foster stood.
‘[Foster is] combining the proximity with strong eye contact too, which, if it weren’t a ritual between friends, as this seems to be, could suggest dominance or even conflict,’ she said.
Kidman appeared to return the intensity by matching Foster’s gaze and holding on to her upper arm, which seemed to indicate they were talking about an intense subject, due to the actresses’ ‘small shaking movements,’ which seemed ‘to be emphasizing their words to each other.’
Toward the end of the clip, Foster stands upright and appears to be ready to end the conversation and step away, but Kidman doesn’t break eye contact and seems to hold onto her hand as she continues talking.
‘Nicole actually seems to prolong the conversation, seeming to want to insist on her answer to whatever it was Jodie asked,’ James clarified.
The body language expert also explained what it was about the conversation that so fascinated social media users.
‘It’s the contrast in branding and style that makes this ritual look odd though,’ James clarified. ‘Jodie is known for her tough interrogative roles, but Nicole has a much more ethereal, wafting, elegant vibe, making this intense, looming approach over her look like a mismatch of body language styles.’

Demi Moore was left shocked as she earned Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for The Substance at the Golden Globes 2025
She triumphed over an impressive field that included the aforementioned Ariana Grande for Wicked, in addition to Selena Gomez for Emilia Pérez, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, Margaret Qualley for The Substance and Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.

She won over an impressive field including: Amy Adams for Nightbitch, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez, Mikey Madison for Anora and Zendaya for Challengers.
Demi began her acceptance speech by saying: ‘Oh, wow! I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like, over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. And I am just so humbled and so grateful.
’30 years ago I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress, and at that time I made that mean that this is not something I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged, and I bought in and I believed that. That corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I had done what I was supposed to do.’
