Make-up will sit differently on the skin over the years, so your go-to products from your 20s and 30s might not work as well in your 40s, 50s and beyond.

Speaking to GB News, a doctor shared how to get the best coverage for older skin, and why wearing a thick foundation can be an ageing mistake.

Flawless make-up starts with a good base, so make sure to prep your skin properly, according to beauty expert and board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Dr. Bandy, Dr Amy Bandy.

“This begins with an adequate moisturiser along with a daily SPF, since all cosmetics sit much better on hydrated and protected skin,” she said.

Once skin care is applied, it is time for primer. The type you use and how you apply it can be an easy way to enhance your natural features.

Dr Bandy said: “Applying a very lightly textured illuminating primer to areas such as the tops of your cheekbones and the middle of your face will noticeably bring back some of the healthy glow you had years ago.”

Foundation is where people can really start to go wrong, the expert said. A common mistake is using thick, heavy formulas that really sink into the skin and highlight imperfections.

Instead, opt for a lighter coverage product. This will give your skin a nice glow without putting a spotlight on any fine lines and wrinkles.

Dr Bandy said: “I typically recommend foundation with sheer to medium coverage and with a radiant or satin finish. I have found this provides a nice balance of covering up imperfections without emphasising those same issues.

“Using a matte product may help to accentuate fine lines and skin texture. I generally apply foundation only to areas that need to be covered, and then blend outwards with a dampened sponge so the skin still appears to be skin.”

As a sheer foundation will only provide light coverage, concealer can be used to fix any further blemishes, dark marks or circles.

Be sparing with concealer, as this can also sink into fine lines and wrinkles on the skin

However – like foundation – it can settle into cracks on the skin, so the beauty expert warned to use it sparingly. Dr Bandy said: “When selecting concealer, I generally choose to use primarily under the eye and around any areas of uneven colouring.

“It is best to avoid applying large amounts of concealer as it will tend to fall into folds and call attention to the area.”
