The BBC is facing mounting criticism on two fronts over fears that its football coverage is being eroded by relentless budget cuts. Earlier today, the corporation was forced to deny rumours that it planned to axe local radio commentary for away matches, after ITV presenters Ed Balls and Mark Pougatch led a furious backlash on social media.

Separately, warnings have emerged that Match of the Day itself risks sliding into decline — much as Football Focus did — if the broadcaster continues to prioritise cost savings over programme quality.

The twin controversies come as the BBC pursues a target of saving £500 million over three years, a drive that has already claimed several well-known programmes. Critics fear the corporation’s flagship football output could become the next casualty, with top pundits potentially lured away to rival platforms if standards are allowed to slip.

The controversy erupted after reports suggested that fans of Norwich City would lose dedicated BBC local radio commentary for away fixtures, instead being forced to listen to coverage provided by the home side’s regional station. The move was reportedly part of an effort to slash millions from the budget over the coming two years.

The BBC moved quickly to stamp out the claims, contacting local stations directly to clarify that the rumours were unfounded.

In a statement, the corporation said: “We are looking at ways to reduce duplication and showcase more of our Local commentary teams across the BBC, but no decisions have been made. Any updates will be announced in due course.”

Despite the denial, the story had already triggered a fierce reaction online, with several prominent broadcasting figures publicly condemning the idea. Norwich, who lost 2-1 at home to West Brom in their Championship opener, are due to visit Millwall on Saturday.

ITV’s Pougatch, who began his own career in local radio, was among the most vocal critics. “This would be an absolute disgrace if true. Where do I sign the petition?” he wrote on social media. “Local football coverage is EXACTLY the sort of thing the BBC should do. No one else will!”

Balls, the former Cabinet Minister and Good Morning Britain presenter, was equally scathing. “This can’t be true – and it’s not even April 1st,” he posted, describing the commentaries of BBC Norfolk’s Chris Goreham as “peerless” and “relied upon by #ncfc fans around the world.” He added that they represent “a hugely valued public service for many Norfolk based fans who can’t go to games.”

Former TNT Sports presenter and Norwich supporter Jake Humphrey also weighed in, insisting: “This is literally what the BBC SHOULD be doing.”

This can’t be true – and it’s not even April 1st – @CGoreham commentaries are peerless and relied upon by #ncfc fans around the world – and they are a hugely valued public service for many Norfolk based fans who can’t go to games – they are what the @bbc should be all about… https://t.co/ckHaRhdfrY

The local radio row is merely the latest flashpoint in a sweeping programme of cuts across the corporation. In June, bosses confirmed that 550 roles would be eliminated and a number of shows decommissioned. Popular programmes including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind and Live At The Apollo have all been dropped as part of what the BBC described as “really tough choices.”

Beyond entertainment, the corporation’s sports portfolio has also been shrinking. Earlier this week, it emerged that coverage of the World Indoor Bowls Championship — broadcast annually since the event’s launch in 1979 — would be discontinued. The Boat Race, meanwhile, has migrated to Channel Four.

Rugby league has also been affected, with the Rugby League World Cup returning behind a paywall for the first time since 2017, now to be shown on Premier Sports. Each loss adds to a growing sense that the BBC’s offering is being steadily hollowed out.

Alongside the local radio furore, serious questions are being raised about the future of Match of the Day. The programme has been described as one of the BBC’s crown jewels, but concerns are growing that it could follow Football Focus into decline if cost-cutting takes precedence over quality.

Gary Lineker’s departure has been characterised as “a massive own goal” for the corporation, with warnings that his absence leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

The current presenting team of Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan has been praised, but fears persist that leading pundits like Alan Shearer may eventually be tempted elsewhere — particularly as podcasts and rival platforms offer increasingly attractive alternatives.

The BBC’s handling of the World Cup also drew criticism, with the main presenting team based in Salford rather than travelling to the United States.

“When too much attention focuses on saving money rather than preserving what has made the show the success it has been for over 60 years, the quality will suffer.”
