Danny Murphy delivered one of the most unexpected moments of this World Cup during BBC’s coverage of the Ivory Coast versus Norway round of 32 clash earlier today.
The former Liverpool midfielder, working as co-commentator alongside Steve Bower, seized upon a rather unusual opportunity when Fulham’s Oscar Bobb came on as a substitute for Norway.
With the Scandinavians leading 1-0, Murphy waited for a quiet spell in the action following a hydration break before sharing a deeply personal tale about his missing cat – who just happened to share a name with the player who’d just entered the pitch.
As Bobb touched the ball for the first time, Bower noted: “Here’s Bobb’s first involvement.” What followed was a ten-second silence before Murphy chimed in with: “I used to have a cat called Bob.”
Bower quipped back: “The game’s not that bad,” but Murphy pressed on regardless.
“Yeah, he jumped in the back of a Royal Mail van, and we lost him,” the pundit revealed.
“Sad really. Anyway,” Murphy added with a laugh, leaving his colleague to steer things back to the football.
