Viewers of Michael McIntyre’s Big Show were moved to tears during Saturday’s episode when an 81-year-old man from Blackburn performed as the Unexpected Star of the Show.
Peter, who visits his wife Sandra daily in hospice care where she is receiving treatment for dementia, touched the hearts of the audience with his emotional performance and the story of their enduring love.
The pensioner’s family had nominated him for the BBC show after witnessing his tradition of singing at his wife’s bedside.
Michael surprised Peter by setting up an elaborate ruse involving a fake bowls shop at the back of the theatre.
The host encouraged Peter to throw a bowl at the wall, which dramatically fell away to reveal the waiting audience.
A stunned Peter was visibly shocked by the reveal, asking his family how they had managed to keep it secret.

Together they built a life that blessed them with three daughters.
Now, as Sandra receives hospice care for dementia, Peter maintains his daily visits to be by her side.
