Former EastEnders stars Rita Simons and Samantha Womack have prompted a flurry of excitable responses despite delivering a somewhat disappointing update for fans of the BBC soap.

The actresses, who played iconic sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell on the soap from 2007 to 2017, remain firm favourites among viewers who, despite the characters’ tragic deaths in a swimming pool, are always sharing their hopes of a shock return.

The two pre-empted the frenzied response before posting photos of themselves together, reiterating to fans that their characters remain dead.

Ms Simons shared snaps of the two laughing together on a beach, as well as a video of their dogs.

EastEnders fans were quick to theorise how the actors could possibly return to the soap

She penned in the caption: “So…before anyone asks…we are just 2 mates hanging out. No secret signals we promise. Please don’t say it!

“We want to assure you…we are dead! We aren’t coming back…I am saying it now before the comments start.

“We loved every second of being R and R and we are still like sisters…. but we are definitely [death emoji].

“Working on some other exciting things together that we hope we will be able to tell you more about soon! Until then… it’s just me and @samzjanus being t**ts on the beach. Love you all.” (sic)

However, the caveat did nothing to deter eager fans from theorising a way for the characters could make a return to Walford.

One fan pointed out: “Yes…. BUT! We saw Ronnie’s body but we didn’t see Roxy’s, Roxy is 100% still alive.”

Ms Simons replied, simply repeating: “We are dead,” prompting the original commenter to add: “Roxy will never be dead in my eyes, I refuse to believe it #iconic.”

Referencing just two of the current EastEnders characters who had previously been “killed off” before making miraculous returns, one shared: “So was Kathy and Cindy, it’s time for Ronnie and Roxy to come home and reveal Jack’s darkest secret yet.”

Roxy and Ronnie were popular EastEnders characters during their decade-long stint on the soap

However, someone else noted: “Kathy and Cindy both died offscreen. Ronnie and Roxy were seen floating dead in the pool. Very different circumstances.”

“Ronnie and Roxy is that you? Filming on a beach in Ibiza after faking your deaths… Is this where Billy’s gone right now? Is he visiting you?? WE WANT RONNIE AND ROXY BACK!!!!!!!!” one keen fan wrote.

Another penned: “Love that you guys are still friends outside of EastEnders. Just goes to show that people can form amazing lifelong friendships at work.”

A different Instagram user theorised: “I don’t think you’ll be back I personally don’t believe it, however is this just to try put people off track.”

Responding, the Roxy actress wrote: “This makes no sense. My brain hurts.”

One more pleaded: “Please just come back together? We need you back it’s boring without you both.” (sic)
