NatWest is set to shut down 20 more locations next month as bank branch closures continue to sweep UK high streets in a blow to the financial institution’s customers.

Between 2015 and 2024, more than 6,000 bank branch closures took place in Britain, according to research conducted by consumer champion Which?.

In its announcement, the banking giant cited that more than 80 per cent of their current account holders now use digital platforms to do their banking, and most new accounts are opened online.

NatWest stated: “Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.

“Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously. We know it can affect those who are less confident with the alternatives we offer.

“We’ll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on.”

Sam Richardson, the deputy editor of Which? Money, broke down what the impact of bank branch closures on local communities and what needs to be addressed.

He explained: “This milestone of more than 6,000 bank branch closures in just nine years underscores the seismic shift that has taken place in terms of our banking habits and the character of the British high street.

“While some may hardly notice the closure of their local branch as they seamlessly switch to online banking, for others reliant on face-to-face services, the impact can be disastrous.

“It’s not about halting closures altogether, but ensuring that essential banking services remain accessible to those who still rely on them. It is crucial that the Government prioritises opening more hubs quickly, so that people aren’t left behind.”

In response to this trend, banking hubs have been launched across the UK, which are being opened in areas impacted by branch closures.

John Howells, the CEO of LINK, said: “Banking hubs continue to provide a key service on the high street, and we’re delighted to announce these new locations. Millions still rely on cash day in, day out, and we’re committed to keeping cash on the high street.”
