Santander is in the process of closing dozens of bank branches in 2025 with customers opting to use online banking services in lieu of physical locations.

Earlier this year, the high street staple confirmed its branch network would be slashed by 95 in a blow to its customers who prefer in-person contact.

According to research conducted by consumer champion Which?, more than 6,000 bank branch closures have taken place in the UK between 2016 and 2024.

Customers are being urged to check if their local bank branch is shutting down this year and to take advantage of new Banking Hubs that have been set up to offer

Bank branch closures are continuing at an ‘alarming rate’, according to Which? | GETTY

A spokesperson for Santander UK said: “As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future.

“Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside Work Cafés, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance.

“As business, we must move with customers and balance our investment across all the places where we interact with customers, to deliver the very best for them now and in the future.

“Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.”
