A baby girl is among four people killed in a fatal crash in Derby.

The crash occurred late on Saturday night at approximately 11pm on the A38 on a stretch between the A50 Toyota Island and the A516.

A red Hyundai carrying five occupants veered off the carriageway and struck trees.

Derbyshire Police were called to the scene on July 25 and discovered the wrecked vehicle.

Three of the passengers were pronounced dead at the roadside, while the infant was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver, a 33-year-old man who has been arrested, was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, where he continues to receive care.

The women who lost their lives were aged 18 and 30, while the male victim was 36 years old.

Every one of the four victims had been travelling as passengers in the Hyundai.

All those involved in the incident, including the driver, are from Leeds in West Yorkshire.

Relatives of the deceased have been informed, and Derbyshire Police have assigned specialist officers to provide support to the families during what the force described as “this most distressing time.”

The driver has since been placed under arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The section of the A38 where the collision took place was shut for several hours as emergency services worked at the scene.

It has since been reopened to traffic.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman confirmed: “Four people have died and one person has been injured after a crash on the A38 in Derby.

“Emergency services were called to the scene on a stretch of the road between the A50 Toyota Island and the A516 at about 11pm on Saturday (25 July). Officers responded to reports that a red Hyundai car, containing five people, had left the carriageway and crashed into trees.

“Two women, aged 18 and 30, along with a 36-year-old man, were declared dead at the scene. A baby girl was taken to hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead a short while later. All four were passengers in the vehicle.

“The driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries where he remains today. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. All those involved are from Leeds in West Yorkshire.”

They added: “The road was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident but it has since been reopened. The relatives of those involved have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this most distressing time.”

Derbyshire Police have issued a public appeal for anyone who saw the crash to get in touch.

The force is also keen to obtain any dashcam recordings that may have captured the incident.

The spokesman added: “Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to please come forward. We would also like to hear from anyone who has any dash cam footage which may have captured the incident.”
