Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has appeared in court charged with multiple assaults on prison officers.
The 20-year-old appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after three officers were assaulted at Belmarsh in south east London last year.
Rudakubana commented only to confirm his name and other details in a 15-minute hearing.
The court appearance was made via video link from Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.
The 20-year-old had his head resting on his hand during the hearing.
The court heard how one alleged attack resulted in a male prison officer having boiling water mixed with sugar thrown in his face on May 8 last year.
The liquid was allegedly thrown at the officer through an open cell hatch.
It is alleged that a female prison officer had an unknown liquid thrown at her just two days earlier.
In the third incident, another male officer was allegedly punched in the face.
Rudakubana also faces a charge of possessing a bladed article.
The court was told that the alleged weapon was sharp shards of stone.
Prosecutor Catherine Pattison said: “When questioned by a prison officer, he said that he was keeping them for self-defence.”
The case has now been sent to the Central Criminal Court at the Old Bailey.
Rudakubana is expected to appear there by video link again on October 19.
The 20-year-old will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
