Britain’s economy grew by 0.4 per cent between April and June, according to figures released this morning by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).The gross domestic product (GDP) figure for the second quarter of 2026 comes after economy contracted by 0.1 per cent in April before returning to modest growth of 0.1 per cent in May.However, the ONS also confirmed that GDP jumped by 0.3 per cent in June despite growing concerns over the price of oil in response to conflict in the Middle East. People have been evacuated after a large fire involving five bungalows in south Wales.Residents were moved to a nearby leisure centre following the fire at Hazlewood Road, Newbridge in Caerphilly county on Wednesday afternoon. There are no reports of casualties.Councillor Adrian Hussey said some people had lost their homes and were being offered temporary accommodation.He said residents tried to put out the fire but had to evacuate due to its severity.”The houses were absolutely gutted. A former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer has been barred from working in policing after being convicted of drink-driving. Former PC Jonathan Pickerill was stopped by officers in Cheshire on 26 November 2025 and found to be more than twice the legal alcohol limit. At a misconduct hearing, Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson said Pickerill’s actions “undoubtedly damages the trust and confidence that the public have a right to expect of their police”.GMP found the former officer’s behaviour amounted to gross misconduct and said he would have been dismissed from the force had he not already resigned. Across Scotland, lucky skygazers have caught glimpses of the eclipse – despite cloud covering much of the view.
