Asda is bringing digital price tags to 250 of its Express convenience shops, marking a major shift in how the supermarket displays product information.

The electronic shelf labels from VusionGroup mean staff won’t need to manually update prices anymore – a task that’s eaten up countless hours in stores across the country.

As well as showing prices, the clever tech will allow shoppers to scan QR codes on the labels to check allergen details.

This simple change could make a real difference to anyone managing food allergies or intolerances.

The rollout follows a successful trial at the Oxford Road shop in Manchester, which freed up staff members’ time.

Colleagues were able to focus on helping customers, managing deliveries, and replenishing shelves.

As the system is launched, each participating shop will get around 2,800 digital labels that show the price, weight, and cost per unit of products.

That means over 700,000 labels across Asda stores are getting an upgrade.

For shoppers, it means staff are more available when you need them. Plus, you’ll always see accurate pricing and can quickly check important product details with your phone.

It’s also a win for staff, as they can focus on what they do best – helping customers and keeping the shop running smoothly – no more tedious hours spent swapping out paper price tags whenever costs change.

It comes as Asda announces the opening of up to 20 new Express stores before the year ends, starting with Castleford this Wednesday.

These new stores will boast the digital labels from day one, with Asda promising “enhanced efficiency and customer experience”.

Vice President at Asda Express, foodservice and fuel, Joseph Sutton, commented on the supermarket’s latest revamp.

He said: “We’re continuing to invest in enhancing our stores, and the launch of cutting-edge technology across our Express estate is proof of this. By streamlining our in-store operations, we can free up our colleagues to focus on what they do best – serving our customers.

“With the first of 20 new Express sites set to open next, we’re excited to build on this momentum and to bring Asda’s trusted value to even more communities across the UK.”

VusionGroup CEO for the UK and Ireland, Roy Horgan, said: “We are proud to be extending our partnership with Asda as they accelerate their digital transformation.

“This next phase is a testament to both Asda’s digital ambition and the strength of VusionGroup’s market-leading technologies.

“By combining ESLs with IoT innovation and data-rich insight, we are helping to transform the in-store experience for Asda customers and colleagues.”

In other exciting Asda news, the supermarket recently announced an “incredible” new George collection, promising “timeless and affordable” fashion.

The Autumn/Winter offering starts from just £8 for wardrobe essentials and tops out at £45 for statement outerwear.

It’s a collection that aims to blend “heritage” chic with current trends.
