Mae Muller, the 28-year-old singer who flew the flag for Britain at Eurovision 2023, has announced her intention to walk away from the music industry, describing herself as “miserable” in an emotional TikTok video.
The artist pleaded with her followers to convince her to stay, saying: “This music thing, I need you guys to tell me not to quit because why is it so hard.”
She explained that years in the business had drained her passion entirely.
“I feel like I’ve been doing it for so long now and I just feel like all the joy and fun has been sucked out and it’s kind of making me miserable,” she told fans.

Ms Muller’s Eurovision journey took place in Liverpool, with the UK hosting after Ukraine’s victory the previous year amid the ongoing conflict.
Her entry, I Wrote A Song, secured just 24 points, landing her in 25th position out of 26 competing nations.
The performance followed Sam Ryder’s remarkable runner-up finish in 2022 with Space Man, which had raised hopes for British success at the contest.

Six months after Eurovision, Ms Muller dropped her debut studio album Sorry I’m Late through Capitol Records.
The record reached number 30 in the UK charts, though she later departed from the label to pursue an independent path.
In April 2024, she released the single Tell You That as a solo artist, having also made appearances on programmes including The Graham Norton Show to promote her work.
Ms Muller’s Eurovision appearance was overshadowed by controversy when tweets from 2020 resurfaced in which she declared she “hates Britain” and labelled the Conservative Party “racist and elitist.”

The backlash prompted questions about whether she should represent the nation at all, but Ms Muller stood firm on her remarks.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, she acknowledged the awkward timing: “Me saying, ‘I hate this country’ is not ideal as I am representing this country.
“But I love where I’m from. It’s a privilege to be born here and that’s why I felt strongly.”
She insisted her criticism stemmed from genuine concern for the country’s direction.

BBC“We deserve the best and at that time this amazing country wasn’t getting the best. We were being let down,” she added.
The singer chose to distance herself entirely from Eurovision 2024, revealing she had avoided following the competition for the sake of her mental wellbeing.
“The pressure is just too much, it’s a shame cos I luv performing and I luv music but the fans were the only thing that made it enjoyable,” she wrote on X a year after her Eurovision journey.
She called for greater safeguards for performers, stating: “More needs to be done to protect the artist’s mental health because it’s not actually normal what they go through.”
Following her latest TikTok revelation, supporters flooded the comments with messages of encouragement. One wrote: “Genuinely please don’t quit. It’s not all about being the biggest star, you can successfully be a fab niche artiste.”
Another urged: “Never quit but take breaks when needed. You’re such a talented icon.”
