Andy Burnham has been urged to enter an “anti-Brexit coalition” as pressure mounts on Labour to commit to rejoining the European Union.
The Prime Minister has been warned there is a “deafening alarm” from new polling showing a potential route to an EU rejoin pledge.
Several major polls suggest Labour could emerge as the largest party at the next general election but may need support from the Liberal Democrats and Greens.
That could create the prospect of an alliance between pro-EU parties if the numbers seen in the latest projections were repeated at an election.
YouGov’s bombshell MRP poll found Labour would win 241 seats, leaving Mr Burnham 85 seats short of a majority.
However, a coalition with the pro-EU Liberal Democrats, SNP and Plaid Cymru would get over the 326 seat threshold.
Anti-Brexit campaigners have seized on the findings to urge Mr Burnham to put rejoining the EU at the heart of Labour’s next manifesto.
Mr Burnham has refused to rule out a pledge to rejoin the EU, while Sir Tony Blair has called for a plan to return within a decade.
The developments could put Brexit at the centre of the next general election campaign, particularly if Labour chooses to seek support from other pro-EU parties.

Ed Miliband tells Iran Britain will not ‘tolerate intimidation’
Ed Miliband has told Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in a face-to-face meeting that Britain will “not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil” from groups linked to his country.
The Foreign Secretary met his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
The Foreign Office said the pair discussed the war in the Middle East, the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the UK’s “unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in UK soil”.
In a readout from the meeting, the department said: “The Foreign Secretary told Araghchi that Iran should choose de-escalation and diplomacy instead of prolonging the war.
“He underlined the importance of restoring freedom of navigation and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the impact continued disruption has on global security and economic stability.
“The Foreign Secretary reiterated the UK’s unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in UK soil, including attacks on the British Jewish community.
“The Foreign Secretary made clear that Britain will not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil and set out the measures the Government has taken in response.”

Ed Miliband has announced an £88million aid package to Gaza – just as the British Army faces cuts to save £30million.
The huge aid package will provide medical relief, including rehabilitation for children with blast injuries, and mental health services for Palestinians.
Britain’s tax-funded aid will also provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene services, waste management, the Foreign Office said.
Mr Miliband said: “It is vital that civilians in Gaza have unhindered access to aid. The UK is pledging a major new package of aid to provide much needed healthcare support to those desperately in need. We urge the Government of Israel to listen to our call to action and take steps to end its unacceptable restrictions on Gaza.”
The Foreign Office said the aid package followed a “reset of its approach to Israel and Palestine earlier this month”.
