The opening of a Rob Burrow Motor Neurone Disease Centre in Yorkshire has inspired Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to do something similar in his region.

He made the comment after a visit to the first-of-its-kind centre in Leeds, which was opened by Prince William last month.

The centre for patients and their families was the idea of the Leeds Rhinos star, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2019 and died aged 41 in June 2024, and his consultant Dr Agam Jung.

Posting to X, Mr Burnham said he was inspired by the thought of creating a Rob Burrow Centre “on our side of the Pennines”.

“It was wonderful to visit the new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds with Rob’s family,” Mr Burnham said.

“What a place, and what a difference he and they will make for families coming after them.

“Thanks to everyone who donated and, of course, to the great Kevin Sinfield,” he said.

“Kevin [Sinfield], expect a call from me in the New Year.”

Rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield completed seven ultramarathons in seven days to raise money and awareness for MND and in memory of Burrow.

He and his team raised more than £1.15m during the challenge, after initially aiming for a target of £777,777.

In 2023, Sinfield stopped short of the finish at the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon to carry his friend over the line.
